We eagerly await when the progressive West will forbid calling monkeypox monkeypox, just because it is politically incorrect, exclusionary, and if all that wasn't enough, it is even dehumanizing.

This little pox, no, nowadays it mostly attacks gay and bisexual men, just like GRID at the time, sorry, AIDS, only not as deadly. Kind of dumbed down black pox, huh. But let's not run so far ahead!

Monkeypox, i.e. monkeypox, is an extremely rare disease that was first detected in 1958, when the characteristic rashes appeared on two individuals of a monkey colony, hence the name, and in 1970, it also infected people in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Since then, cases of monkeypox have been reported in several other Central and West African countries: Cameroon, Central African Republic, Ivory Coast, Gabon, Liberia, Nigeria, the Republic of Congo and Sierra Leone, but the majority of infections have remained in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Then, in 2003, a small outbreak was caused in the USA by the virus, which was brought in from Ghana with the help of rodents; this was the first case when monkeypox reared its head outside of Africa. Pretty much until now.

the WHO's current statement, since May 13, 2022, cases of monkeypox have been reported from 12 countries that are not endemic, and the patients did not even visit endemic areas. Based on currently available information, monkeypox is spread through body fluids during close physical contact, primarily among homosexual or bisexual men. I mean in the very developed world. The Spanish authorities hastily launched an investigation to find out if there is an outbreak on the island of Gran Canaria after about 80,000 Spaniards and foreigners attended the Maspalomas gay festival between May 5 and 15. According to their claim, the virus test of the festival-going men from Madrid, Italy and Tenerife was also positive.

By the way, the WHO expects that more and more cases of monkeypox will be identified with the expansion of surveillance, in any case, a total of 92 laboratory-confirmed and 28 suspected cases were reported by May 21, and there have been no deaths so far.

The period from infection to the appearance of symptoms generally lasts from 5 to 13 days. The initial symptoms can easily be confused with other illnesses: fatigue, fever, lymph node swelling, muscle pain, back pain; the rashes appear 1-3 days after the onset of fever, mainly on the face and limbs, and then fade and dry over time. The symptoms can last for 2-4 weeks, there is no specific therapy, only supportive treatment, the vaccines originally made against smallpox also provide a certain degree of protection against the closely related monkeypox virus.

Returning to the etymology: our assumption is legitimate because the gay community already at the beginning of its career placed great emphasis on communication, more precisely on the cosmeticization of language.

At the end of the '60s, the Stonewall bar, operating in a secluded side street of New York and under the control of the Italian mafia, hosted the members of the homosexual subculture. However, the clash with the police after the famous raid on June 11, 1969 did not help the perception of this deviant social stratum, even though the liberal press and some of the politicians at the time tried to describe the events as intolerance towards the minority and police overreach. After the Stonewall riots, activists had to find a new term to define themselves and describe their movement homosexual .

But why didn't a precise definition, the introduction of which was otherwise intended to trigger the everyday use of much more degrading terms - such as sodomy - meet the criteria? Since homo in the word composition does not come from the Latin word meaning man from the Greek word homos meaning the same That's why the gay (cheerful, light-hearted, introduced into the Hungarian language with the word "gay" with a different primary meaning, but also with a positive base) was born, which proved to be a hit from several points of view - it is short, can be formed in a variety of ways (see: gay rights - melegjogok ) , it has a positive basic meaning, and in the twentieth century a more frivolous meaning was also developed, which from the twenties was applied to the hedonistic, but not homosexual, high-world lifestyle.

However, the gayest really had a resounding success in 1973, when the American Psychiatric Association removed homosexuality from the list of mental disorders. But at the end of the 70s, GRID (Gay-related immune deficiency) appeared, at least the American Medical Association named the new disease "gay-related immune deficiency" for the first time. In a July 3, 1981 article in the New York Times, he drew attention to the fact that a peculiar disease was causing deaths among the homosexual patients of some local and San Francisco doctors. Doctors feared that the "gay plague" would become unstoppable among those who have relationships with hundreds of different partners each year. According to a study published in the medical journal Journal of Sex Research, only 2.7 percent of homosexual men answered that they live in a monogamous relationship and have only had a relationship with one partner in their life. In contrast, 21.6 percent of respondents put the number of their parterres between 100 and 500. Another survey published in 1978 indicated an even more extreme lifestyle, according to research cited in AP Bell and MS Weinberg's book, 43 percent of gay men reported more than 500 partners, while 28 percent reported more than 1,000 partners. And since then, quoting Comrade Virág, "the international situation is getting worse and worse."

Back to AIDS: in the wake of the epidemic, these facts - unflattering to gays, but previously well-hidden - became public, and mainstream society was horrified, as a little girl in Florida was infected by her homosexual dentist, and countless other victims due to uncontrolled blood transfusions contracted the disease; it seemed that the achievements of the gay majority would crumble, and the "gay plague" would bury the movement under itself.

However, the activists did not give up the fight, they launched a campaign to change the name, once again pushing the matter into the arena of etymology and insinuating that the infection poses a threat to everyone. They just forgot to add that it applies to everyone who has sexual contact with homosexuals, while using intravenous drugs, or during blood transfusions.

The gayest finally succeeded, shortly after the publication of GRID, in renaming the disease most associated with homosexuals. As Time magazine reported, on July 27, 1982, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention held an extraordinary meeting, at which, at the suggestion of a well-known researcher, Sasu Siegelbaum, a new, more neutral name was adopted instead of the GRID epidemic, which refers to gays. This is how the term AIDS, which is exclusively used today, was born, i.e. Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome - "acquired immune deficiency syndrome".

Getting ready for monkeypox?

Depends. If, contrary to its usual habits, monkeypox spreads rapidly in the gay communities of the modern world, we can even bet on it to say goodbye to its original name just as quickly.
