Ursula von der Leyen spoke from Davos to the Politico after Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán suggested in an official letter that the European Commission's proposal for sanctions, including the oil embargo, should not be on the agenda at the planned summit.
In this regard, the chairman of the committee said in the interview that he does not want to create false expectations that all of this can be resolved next week.
"I think it is not a topic that should be resolved at a meeting of the European Council. Namely, because the matter we are debating is too technical.
These are landlocked countries that need an alternative wired service. In other words, we need to discuss investments related to pipelines, we are discussing refineries that need to be modernized, investments, and renewable energy," said the chairman of the committee.
The Orbán government has already indicated that 15-18 billion euros would be needed to stop dependence on Russian crude oil, which includes the modernization of oil pipelines and refineries. Negotiations are underway in Brussels on what kind of response to the Hungarian demand should be given.
