According to a letter from the European Commission, Thierry Breton, the Commissioner responsible for the internal market of the European Commission, called on Hungary on Wednesday to suspend fuel prices that are discriminatory according to the EU's interpretation against vehicles with foreign license plates, otherwise they risk legal proceedings, according to the letter cited by Reuters . which can be read in the Magyar Hírlap.
On the one hand, Breton asked László Palkovics for information on the reasons for the measure, as well as how long the gasoline price freeze will be in effect. In addition, he drew the Hungarian minister's attention to the fact that linking the official price of gasoline to a Hungarian license plate may be considered a violation of EU law. At the same time, he called on Hungary to suspend the gas price freeze until compliance with EU law is ensured.
I ask you to give your answer regarding the justification and validity period of the measures that may be considered a breach of EU law - wrote Breton to the Hungarian Minister of Technology.
According to the EU Commissioner, the European Commission reserves the right to initiate urgent infringement proceedings, which may ultimately lead to court proceedings and possible fines against Hungary.
