On March 15, 2014, the outdoor bust of our best-known poet, Sándor Petőfi, was erected on the main square of Haraszti. The bronze replica of the freedom fighter, who is also known for his patriotism, was created by László Hunyadi, a sculptor from Marosvásárhely, at the request of the local Reformed Church. Since then, the local Hungarians have been commemorating the heroes of 1848-49 every year on March 15 at the statue, which was built with public donations.
This national memorial of the Hungarians in Croatia fell victim to vandalism in the middle of February last year. According to the police investigation, the more than half-height work of art was knocked off its pedestal and left on the pavement by a local resident (KM). Fortunately, the work of art was not damaged, only the pedestal was damaged. The statue was then successfully returned to its rightful place, so the local Hungarians had a place to celebrate March 15.
At the end of the week, however, the vandal ransacked again, fortunately the statue remained intact, but the marble covering of its pedestal was broken into small pieces, so it needs to be renovated again.
Norbert Csiszár, the president of the Hungarian minority self-government of the Lacházi district, said that the police took action immediately after the report and arrested the alleged perpetrator on the spot.
