According to Russian Lt. Gen. Igor Konasenkov, more than thirty soldiers of the 54th brigade of the armed forces decided to lay down their arms and surrender after the fire preparations for the offensive of the Russian troops in the area of ​​the settlement of Novomykhaylovka in the Donetsk region.

According to him, however, when the Ukrainian soldiers approached the Russian troops with white flags, the Ukrainian soldiers opened fire on them. Thirty-two Ukrainian soldiers lost their lives in the incident.
