This week, Friday, June 17, the 19th FINA World Swimming Championships, organized in Hungary, will begin on day zero. Originally, the 2022 World Cup was to be held in Japan, but in January of this year, the Fukuoka city government announced that they could not undertake the continental competition due to the coronavirus epidemic.

After that, the International Swimming Association started organizing an extraordinary World Swimming Championship, which was hosted by Budapest. It is interesting that the last time Hungary organized the World Water Championships was in 2017, the rights to which were also received from another country, Mexico.

In addition to Budapest, the event will be hosted by Debrecen, Sopron and Szeged. Swimming competitions and diving are held in the Duna Arena, synchronized swimming in the Széchy Tamás Swimming Pool, open water swimming in the Lupa Lake, and water polo matches are held in Budapest at the Hajós Alfréd National Sports Swimming Pool, as well as in Debrecen, Sopron and Szeged. The group matches of the water polo tournament with a Hungarian interest, as well as the straight elimination stage, will take place on Margaret Island, while the other groups will compete in the already mentioned rural towns.

"Since 1991, this will be the first FINA World Championship without temporary pools, this is a significant cost-cutting factor, and it also has another positive message, when sustainability and the use of water are more important than ever"

- noted Sándor Wladár, president of MÚSZ and the organizing committee.

Hopefully, we will have many happy moments together, but before we leave for the World Cup, we would like to present the composition of the Hungarian team and we will also try to have a little opportunity. Let the swimmers come first, and tomorrow we will deal with the water polo players.

Swimming and synchronized swimming competitions will be held from June 18 to 25. The qualifiers and semi-finals of the swimming competitions will be held in the morning, while the finals will start at 18:00 every day in the Duna Arena. Hungary will be represented by 33 swimmers (+7 open water swimmers) at the tournament, the exact list of participants can be found at the end of the article.

According to the sports leader, we can expect 3-4 medals from our swimmers based on the preliminary chances.

Of course, it depends on a lot of things, but that particular bar should not be set high, even though a world championship organized at home can give our swimmers an extra advantage.
