The Hungarian government was the first in Central Europe to support the start of Ukraine's EU accession process, but at the same time, it does not compromise its national interests, especially when it comes to energy policy - stressed Zoltán Kovács, Secretary of State for International Communications and Relations, in an interview broadcast on the Italian news channel SkyTg24 on Monday night.

Zoltán Kovács noted that in order to join the EU, Kyiv must fulfill the same conditions as other countries. He added that on the part of the member states, supporting Ukraine's accession is more of a political signal than "the usual way".

The Secretary of State responsible for international communication and relations answered the questions of journalist Cristiana Mancini via an Internet connection in the evening world politics program of the SkyTg24 news channel.

Zoltán Kovács said that Hungary did not veto the decisions of the European Union:

according to the operation of the union, "if there is no agreement, there is no decision"

he declared.

He emphasized that the Hungarian government stands for the protection of national interests, which means that it does not cross certain boundaries. He mentioned the energy policy as an example, as well as the respect for religious freedom vis-à-vis the members of the Orthodox Church.

Regarding the sanctions, he said that

Hungary has always taken a clear position: sanctions " only work if they cause pain to the selected target,

but now Europe is suffering a lot, and we will see how the situation develops in summer, then in autumn and winter”.

Zoltán Kovács said that Hungary was "blackmailed several times" by the European Union even before the war in Ukraine. " You can't continue like this, you can't continue punishing a member state, " he noted. He believed that the unity of Europe should prevail in issues outside the borders of the union, while " the decisions of the member states and the voters of the member states must be respected ."
