Máté Kocsis, Fidesz faction leader, submitted his proposal for the eleventh amendment to the Basic Law on Tuesday. According to this, Hungary's 19 counties would once again be transformed into counties.
– From the founding of the state until 1949, the basic territorial units of the Hungarian public administration were the counties. The use of the word county was abolished by the dictatorial communist regime, which wanted to completely break with the previous Hungarian constitutional and state administration system. Restoring the use of the word county in today's Hungarian legal system ensures that the constitutional traditions of the thousand-year-old Hungarian statehood continue to live on in this form, says the justification for the amendment to the Basic Law.
The county name will be used from January 1, 2023.
The amendment also includes the previously mentioned change, according to which the European Parliament and municipal elections will be held on the same day in 2024. The village leaders elected in 2019 will remain in office until October 1, 2024.
Also on Tuesday afternoon, the press noticed that a similar amendment was included in the law on next year's budget, submitted by Finance Minister Mihály Varga. Pursuant to this, the title of the newly appointed government commissioners will change back to chieftain in the future.
As with the county, the archbishop would be introduced in the spirit of respecting and revitalizing historical traditions. This administrative rank was abolished in 1950 by the communist government.
