Hungary represents Hungarian national interests in every forum, in every step, and those who dispute this have a dispute not with the Hungarian government, but with the Hungarian people - among other things, the state secretary responsible for international communication and relations emphasized this in front of journalists in Vienna on Monday.
After the meeting, Zoltán Kovács told MTI by phone: in the background discussion, he pointed out that after the fourth two-thirds victory achieved with a record-high turnout and vote share, the support of the Hungarian people, which stands behind the Hungarian government, is unquestionable.
"We ask not only the journalists, but also the politicians, to respect the scale of the Hungarian election result and the mandate given as a result," he said.
Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has no other job than to represent the Hungarian interest. This explains why Hungary acts in this way, for example, in relation to issues of energy security, sanctions policy or other aspects of the war raging in Ukraine, explained the state secretary.
Zoltán Kovács said: in the background discussion, the most important topics were the domestic political situation after the Hungarian elections, as well as the European and international situation, in addition to energy security, questions related to last week's Western Balkans summit were also discussed.
The state secretary recalled: before the decision on the latest EU sanctions package, the Austrian chancellor also noted that Hungary's comments and perspectives regarding energy are completely understandable. This shows that Austria understands the Hungarian position on many issues, he added.
Zoltán Kovács said about what was said at the background discussion: in relation to energy, there was a question as to why fuel is cheaper for Hungarians in Hungary.
The state secretary indicated that all European countries are trying to compensate their citizens due to inflation and high fuel prices. Hungarian people are compensated from the Hungarian budget, from the Hungarian people's money, he emphasized.
It is not true that an Austrian citizen has to pay more for fuel in Hungary, since he can buy it at the market price. It's the other way around, Hungarian citizens get cheaper energy due to the reduction in utilities and price restrictions on fuel, he said.
He also indicated that there is a different compensation policy in Austria, which tries to give compensation in cash and benefits based on families and households, with which the Hungarian steps must be compared.
During the background discussion, Zoltán Kovács also reminded that the Hungarian utility reduction system has been operating for years as a system in which energy supply to the population is not done on a market basis, in this segment profit is not the most important aspect, but the security of supply and the balancing of prices.
