According to Judit Varga, the recessionary mood created by the war in Ukraine and the energy crisis allows the debate about the future of the European Union to turn towards real problems. The Minister of Justice of Hungary spoke about this at the Tusnádfürdő in Székelyföld on Friday afternoon, within the framework of the Bálványos Summer Free University and Student Camp (Tusványos). He expressed his views together with Kelemen Hunor, Deputy Prime Minister of the Romanian government, at a panel discussion on the EU's future visions.
Judit Varga thought it was basically good that the EU started a debate about the renewal, but she believed that there was no real intention to consult EU citizens, the Brussels bureaucracy wanted to put its own ideas in the people's mouths. However, the emerging crisis has "knocked on the window" and the recessionary mood allows for discussion of real problems affecting people.
"When we talk about war and peace or whether there is heating or not, it can be: there will be an opportunity to sit down at the negotiating table," said the minister. He noted: when Hungary formulates a polar opinion about the future of the union, it reflects concern and the principle "I'm angry for you, not against you" prevails. He declared: if the entire EU institutional system were to fall apart, the last beam would be held by the Hungarians.
At the same time, the minister criticized the European Commission's "stealth extension of powers", he believed that a treaty extension would be needed that would clearly state which areas fall under national competence and in which the competence is divided. Judit Varga considered the abolition of the system of unanimous decision-making and the imposition of supra-national candidate lists for the European Parliament elections as the two biggest sources of danger for the treaty amendment.
Kelemen Hunor , the political elite of the EU pushes power-technical decisions to the fore when it tries to get the rejection of consensus decision-making accepted. The renewal of the EU cannot be limited only to technical questions of power, "if there is to be a change, it must be a substantive change" , said the president of the Romanian Hungarian Democratic Association (RMDSZ). He also touched on the fact that if the EU treaty is amended, the new treaty must also provide a perspective for indigenous national minorities. The politician noted: the war in Ukraine will either force the EU to cooperate more closely, or completely destroy it.
