The claims circulating on social media that they are planning to build an "intercontinental undersea pipeline" between Hungary and Israel in order to "sell the water from under the country" are false.
The false claims refer to a patent application submitted by Mihály Kálnai on January 26, 2009, with the title that
"Drinking Water Supply to the State of Israel by an Intercontinental Undersea Pipeline".
Zoltán Goda, a water technology expert, looked into the technical background and presumed origin of the popular conteo. According to the researcher of the Faculty of Water Sciences of the National Public Service University, it is of course just fake news
the Hungarian drinking water resources would be secretly pumped out and then sent to Israel via underwater pipelines.
According to Goda, such a project would simply not be worth it economically, because it takes a lot of energy to move the water, and moreover, the quality of the water could not be maintained for such a long time. On the other hand, it would be impossible to implement such a project secretly, as it would be a pipeline crossing several countries and affecting tens of thousands of square kilometers of land.
The researcher also got in touch with Mihály Kálnai, from whom he learned that his patent is about a pipeline connecting the Danube Delta with Israel. "The idea was that the Danube water coming into the mouth ceases to be fresh water after it flows into the Black Sea, so it could be used even before that for a water-scarce country like Israel. (…) For this, an approx. It would be necessary to build a 3,300 km long pipeline along the lines of Romania, Greece, Turkey, Cyprus, Israel"
- quotes Goda Kálnai's idea.
But this project never materialized. On the one hand, it would be too expensive, and on the other hand, in recent decades, Israel has focused more on economy and sustainable and more efficient water supply
There is also a version of the story, according to which the secret operation was carried out by Bárátság II. I would do it on a petroleum pipeline. According to Goda, this is not possible just because
Friendship II. oil pipeline does not go to Israel.
In addition, the oil pipeline was not built to carry water.
