The government has adopted the basis of a new, simpler and more flexible admissions system that adapts to the needs of students and universities, said János Csák, Minister of Culture and Innovation, on his social media page.
"From the fall of 2024, we will transform the higher education admissions system and abolish the language exam requirement."
János Csák stated that the government's goal is to make Hungarian higher education competitive and ensure the success of students, similar to the renewal started 100 years ago by Minister Kunó Klebelsberg. A decisive step in this was the fact that, thanks to the successful restructuring of recent years, three quarters of students now attend more competitive and flexible foundation or church-maintained higher education institutions. The further strengthening of university autonomy and responsibility can only be imagined if the institutions have a meaningful influence on the selection of students, take responsibility for their enrollment, training, supporting their academic life and ensuring a high-quality graduate degree suitable for the Hungarian labor market. At the same time, this also strengthens individual student responsibility, as they have a greater influence on their own training career, choice of institution, and studies.
Within the 500-point admission system, the higher education institution will be able to decide on 100 points, as well as on the matriculation subjects and their level that can be taken into account during the matriculation score calculation, i.e. in which cases an advanced or medium-level matriculation is required.
However, it is important that the admission system still preserves the transparency and predictability of the central administration!
It will still be possible to apply for six places, in addition to the 100 institutional points, 100 points are awarded for high school academic results and 300 points for high school graduation results.
In the future, instead of the mandatory language exam obligation, the universities must ensure the appropriate language competences during the training!
As a result of the change, the autonomy of higher education institutions also increases in the field of language testing and language teaching, but at the same time, they must ensure that their students have the foreign language knowledge necessary to practice the qualification that can be obtained in the given major.
The common goal of the changes is to increase university autonomy and student responsibility!
"I believe that the measures will increase the quality of higher education and the competitiveness of students, as we provide our universities with more freedom, thanks to which the selection of students becomes more accurate, so that our students are more likely to get to the university and the training that they can successfully complete, and then the in the future, they will participate in the labor market with the appropriate language competence!"
- added János Csák.
