The "Cake of Hungary" contest is very popular every year. The National Industry Board of Hungarian Confectionery Manufacturers announced the tender to celebrate our national holiday on August 20, Hungary's symbolic birthday. This year, 28 cakes were entered into the competition.

For the Cake of the Country 2022 contest, confectioners were expected to come up with new, creative ideas, especially cakes and recipes with a Hungarian flavor, associated with the holiday or Hungary, which could only contain natural and healthy ingredients.

The jury tasted the cakes live, in front of the professional audience, at the Hungexpo exhibition. Among the five finalists, the work of Orsolya Karikó from Nagykőrös, "The Naughty Plum Prince", was the runner-up in the "traditional" category.

When the idea of the cake was born, the confectioner was inspired by the harmonious pairing of the excellent Eger red wine and the taste of our favorite Hungarian fruit, the plum. The base of the cake is a flourless, hazelnut dacquoise with whipped caramelized chocolate cinnamon crunch, which is softly layered with a fresh, light and tasty, piquantly seasoned plum chocolate mousse. plum jelly, thus pampering our senses. The crown of the cake is a fruity topping that evokes the taste of freshly picked plums.

In addition to Hungary's Cake, Hungary's Sugar-Free Cake was also chosen. Confectioners came with 17 creations to the competition organized by the Egy Csepp Figyelem Foundation and the Hungarian Confectionery Industry Association.

In addition to taste, appearance and novelty, due to the nature of the competition, the carbohydrate and calorie value also influenced the judges in their decision. The primary goal of the program is to fit the selected sweets into a balanced diet, which can be safely consumed by diabetics and those who follow a healthy lifestyle. To prepare the creations, the confectioners could choose from a list of ingredients checked by the National Association of Hungarian Dietitians.

Hungary's sugar-free cake was Nagyi Kedvence, which was created by László Gyuris, master pastry chef of Szegedi Virág confectionary and café.

In this elegant cake with no added sugar, the fresh, pleasantly sour raspberry pith, the crispness of the white chocolate pistachio, and the light mascarpone mousse complete the harmonious taste of some hibiscus flowers and rosehip marrow. The sponge cake is made from almond and coconut flour, so it does not contain any grain flour.

The energy content of Grandma's favorite cake is 233.8 kcal per slice, while the carbohydrate value is 11.9 g, which means that it can also be a good choice for diabetics, but it is recommended for everyone who is careful about the ingredients of what they eat.

The winning cakes can be tasted from August 19 in many pastry shops in the country and some will also be sold in Budapest, Magyar Ízek Utcá.
