The mayor announced Budapest's five points, based on which he will work in the next period. In his St. Stephen's Day video message published on his Facebook page, Gergely Karácsony spoke about the importance of social solidarity, energy independence, development, green commitment and diversity, which he had already largely emptied.

The legacy of the king who founded the state is always interpreted by politics in accordance with its own interests, but the answers answer the same question: "what is the relationship of this country with itself, what is our relationship with our environment, with Europe, with the world?" The most important element of Szent István's heritage is that these questions can only be answered on a moral basis, he declared.

A regime without moral considerations

Valid answers can only be found if we "reclaim" the space in which politics can be discussed as a practical but moral issue, said the politician. He said: this is necessary because the "regime leading the country" interprets the war and the crisis in Ukraine without moral considerations. There is no trace of distinguishing between good and bad, of humanity, of solidarity in this, said Gergely Karácsony.

According to the mayor, democracy is undermined by those who, knowing the crisis situation, campaign with utility cuts, then cancel those who start electoral divisions and then introduce severe austerity, said Gergely Karácsony.

It is a deliberate misdirection of the people to look for the causes of the country's problems outside the borders. What does the war in Ukraine have to do with the lack of respect for teachers, the severe shortage of nurses and doctors? he asked the question.

Gergely Karácsony said: Hungary's energy supply problem is aggravated by the fact that the country's vulnerability to Russia has not decreased, but increased, and the intention to protect against climate change was also lacking.

The country's vulnerability to Russia has increased

Europe has the will and the money to tackle the economic, energy and climate crisis. However, the Hungarian government does not have access to these sources due to objections to the rule of law, said the politician. Although the rule of law appeared in Hungary as an abstract concept until now, it has now become a "crucial matter", because if there is no change in the rule of law, even more serious restrictions will come, he said.

Christmas slogan in five points

According to his statement, this sets out five points for the next month's tasks for the capital.

The first is that they choose solidarity over misrepresentation: they work to help as much as they can those who have been put in a difficult situation by the rise in utility prices. According to the second point, they want to achieve the energy independence of Budapest's public services with green investments, energy efficiency and energy saving programs.

The third element of the program is development: the replacement of outdated, energy-consuming and polluting public transport vehicles. They want to protect themselves against the effects of climate change with a green commitment, and at the same time work for a livable city, according to the fourth point. The last part of the program is to try to preserve the diversity of the capital.
