Csaba Kőrösi was sworn in as the new president of the UN General Assembly in New York. The Hungarian diplomat took his oath of office on the United Nations Charter in the presence of UN Secretary-General António Gutteres and the previous President of the General Assembly, Abdullah Shadid. The event officially concluded the 76th session of the UN, at which Maldivian diplomat Abdulla Sahid handed over the presidency to Csaba Kőrösi, who will lead the new 77th session that opens tomorrow.
At the ceremony, the Hungarian national flag replaced the flag of the Maldives in front of the office of the President of the UN General Assembly. Csaba Kőrösi took his oath of office in the UN General Assembly hall, according to the text of which the president-elect has only the interests of the UN in mind, acts on the basis of the UN Charter and the code of ethics applicable to the president.
After the ceremony, Csaba Kőrös thanked Hungary and the states of the Eastern European region for their support. In his inauguration speech, the current period is the II. He described it as a period of the most complex challenges since World War II. He mentioned trust, solidarity, sustainability, and scientific validity among the basic principles of his work as president. He highlighted the transition to sustainability by involving all stakeholders, with whom he promised regular consultations.
Regarding the war in Ukraine, he emphasized that it must be stopped immediately because it brings only suffering and is against human rights, prosperity and the planet.
He urged the earliest possible ceasefire. In response to a question, he also said that the current food crisis affects every country in the world, which was only intensified by the war. He praised the agreement reached through the mediation of the UN Secretary General on the renewal of grain deliveries to Ukraine and expressed the hope that the agreement reached could be extended.
