The European Commission (EC) supports the application of the rule of law conditionality against Hungary with artificial arguments, the real goal of Brussels is to replace the Hungarian government, Polish Deputy Foreign Minister Piotr Wawrzyk stated in an interview published on Tuesday. (Pictured above.)
Wawrzyk spoke to the PAP news agency about the EC's proposal, according to which the payment of part of the cohesion funds due to Hungary should be suspended due to concerns about the mismanagement of EU funds.
the PAP news agency whether he thinks these concerns are well-founded, Wawrzyk said: "the reasons behind the proposal are certainly not those described by the EC" , since the Brussels body does not initiate similar procedures against other member states, in which, according to the EC's reports, there are indeed serious corruption problems accompany the use of EU funds.
"In other words, we see that we are dealing with a kind of contrived arguments." - remarked the Polish diplomat.
In response to the question of what the objective of the EC is, Wawrzyk stated: "Similarly to the actions against Poland, their aim is to replace the Hungarian government" .
He explained: the committee "does not like certain governments because they do not share the views of the so-called European mainstream" . The board therefore "uses various legal tricks" in an effort to replace these governments, said Wawrzyk, adding: "this procedure has been practically ineffective so far" .
When asked whether Hungary would really lose EU funds, the deputy minister said: the European Commission will definitely try to set a deterrent example for governments that do not follow its political direction.
"certainly cannot support" such solutions , Wawrzyk stressed. On Sunday Mateusz Morawiecki also emphatically stated that Poland will firmly oppose European institutions depriving Hungary of EU funds.
