If the Ferenc Gyurcsánys do not just want to blackmail Gergely Karácsony, but actually put forward their own candidate for mayor, it can only be Klára Dobrev - Magyar Nemzet learned from sources familiar with the left's internal affairs.
According to them, it is expected that Dobrev of DK and Karácsony of Párbeszéd will be the leaders of the EP list at the same time, and this is the only way for the latter to have a theoretical chance of surpassing the five percent threshold. Connecting Europeanness and Budapest can be the main message of both of their campaigns.
Klára Dobrev could even be a candidate for mayor - our newspaper's sources who are aware of the internal affairs of the left side unanimously stated regarding Ferenc Gyurcsány's suspicious statement the other day that it is "not a default" that Gergely Karácsony will be supported in the 2024 municipal elections. although Dobrev is now in the center of attention with his shadow government, the prime ministership is not really, but the mayor's seat is more of a realistic goal for him, and not least for DK.
Our sources stated: only Klára Dobrev is in the same weight group as Gergelly Karácsony, no other politician or district mayor of the DK can compete with the current mayor. According to some of our informants, it is also in the deck that with his statement Ferenc Gyurcsány wants to "only" blackmail Karácsony in the way he is used to, in order to achieve better positions for his party in the local government elections. Although no one disputed this possible scenario, others drew attention to the fact that it was no coincidence that Gyurcsány became the president of the DK in Budapest.
The left-wing sources of Magyar Nemzet also considered it a realistic scenario that Dobrev would be the leader of the DK and Karácsony of Párbeszéd at the same time in 2024 - and if he were to win, Ferenc Gyurcsány's wife would choose the mayorship instead of the EP representation.
If Párbeszéd really starts on its own, as announced, even in principle, the only possibility is that they jump five percent if Karácsony leads their EP list, said one of our sources. Finally, our sources with insight into the internal affairs of the left pointed out that the fact that the municipal and EP elections will be held on the same day is actually favorable for Dobrev and Karácsony, and the main message of their campaign is expected to be the connection of Budapest and Europeanness, the capital and EU affairs .
