Agents of the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) have gathered enough evidence to indict Hunter Biden, the son of the US president, on suspicion of tax and other crimes, the Washington Post wrote on Thursday.

According to the newspaper, the federal investigation that has been ongoing since 2018 has found substantial evidence to indict Hunter Biden, known as a lobbyist, on suspicion of tax evasion and false statements related to gun ownership. The federal prosecutor overseeing the investigation, Davis Weiss, who was appointed during the presidency of Donald Trump, must decide whether to bring charges. According to the Fox News report, the prosecutor's spokesman did not answer the question of whether he had already convened the indictment jury, but the channel reported, citing another source, that a decision was imminent.

Hunter Biden's lawyer said his client had not been contacted by federal authorities. At the same time, Chris Clark wrote in a statement sent to NBC News that it is a federal crime if a federal agent leaks information about a case being heard by a grand jury, as happened in this case. The legal representative added that they expect an urgent investigation and prosecution from the Ministry of Justice.

According to the Washington Post article, the FBI investigation launched in 2018 initially focused on the financial aspects of Hunter Biden's overseas business and consulting activities, and then the investigation shifted to the businessman's tax return and a legal statement related to the purchase of a firearm.

The state of the investigation was first reported by Fox News back in July, when it announced that the investigation had reached a "critical stage."

An actual indictment a month before the election would look bad for Democrats politically.
