Semmelweis University (SE) is among the 250 best higher education institutions in the world, according to the Times Higher Education (THE) world ranking. For the first time, a Hungarian university is included in the field of 250 in the world ranking.

On Wednesday, Semmelweis University informed MTI that a Hungarian university is included in the top 250 of the world ranking for the first time. The institution published last year, 250-300. was able to improve its place in the region, and in the 2023 world ranking that has just been published, it is already listed among the first 250, they added.

The creators of the world ranking traditionally measure institutions based on the indicators of five areas - educational environment, research, citations, industry revenues including research and development revenues from business partners, and international orientation. SE was able to improve in most indicators, most significantly in the area of ​​citations and research. Among the member states of the European Union, Semmelweis University ranks 64th, typically preceded by German, French and Belgian universities on the list, the institution announced.

In the announcement, quoting Béla Merkely, the rector of the university, they wrote: Semmelweis University is the best higher education institution in Hungary and Central-Eastern Europe, which is best known for its scientific performance, its internationally recognized educational quality, its participation in international blood circulation, and its large number of foreign students. , as well as its prominent role in the Covid epidemic, owes its outstanding results in the higher education rankings. " We are following in the footsteps of our predecessors, and in the last four years we have done extremely intensive work, which is also reflected in our results. We are now considered a serious competitor of Western European universities, our goal is to be included in the world's hundred best higher education institutions and Europe's top 5 medical universities, " said the rector.

Merkely: SE's scientific performance increased by thirty percent during the epidemic

While it deteriorated at most universities, Semmelweis University (SE) increased its academic performance by 30 percent during the coronavirus epidemic, said the rector of the institution on Thursday morning on the current channel M1, referring to the fact that SE was ranked among the best 250 universities in the world by the Times Higher Education (THE) world ranking.

Béla Merkely said that the ranking examines the best 1,800 of the world's 28,000 universities, and traditionally based on the indicators of five areas - educational environment, research, citations, industry revenues including research and development income from business partners, and international orientation. institutions are measured.

He added that even during the coronavirus epidemic, it was possible to increase their academic performance, for example, while other universities typically declined due to, for example, remote work.

Regarding the ranking, he said that in order for Semmelweis University to be among the top 250 universities, it must be among the top 10 in certain indicators. He added that, for example, the citation rate of publications coming out of the institution is very high.

"Semmelweis University's educational standards, research performance and patient care activities are exemplary," said Béla Merkely.

In the past four years, SE has continuously improved its position in THE world ranking: in 2019 it was ranked 491st, then in 2020 it moved up to 457th and in 2021 to 426th. It was already 277th on the 2022 list, from where it moved forward to 236th place, the university announced.

11 domestic higher education institutions were added to the list.

Oxford and Harvard are at the top of the overall ranking, and Stanford and Cambridge are in a tie for third place, the announcement reads.
