The domestic left is not only scrambling against Hungary in the European Parliament, but left-wing activists such as lawyer Gábor Magyar, who is known for his openly anti-government statements and lawsuits against our country, also work in the European Commission, which disregards the requirement of impartiality.
Let's see what role the left-wing politician-lawyer György Magyar's son played in preparing the so-called rule of law reports condemning Hungary!
Lawyer Gábor Magyar has been working against the Hungarian government in Brussels for years, and he contributes to the preparation of the so-called rule of law reports condemning our country for the European Commission (EC). Incidentally, he is the son of György Magyar, a well-known left-wing lawyer, who works in one of the Commission's directorates-general.
In 2017, Gábor Magyar left for the European Commission in Brussels, where his task is to "examine the situation of the rule of law, and within that, the justice system in the member states". Then, in a "farewell interview" published on the Hungarian Lawyer Blog, he said:
"I felt that by acting as a lawyer I was essentially legitimizing a regime that no longer met the requirements of a democratic state of law that respects human rights. The stages of the rule of law are set, there are actors on stage, the text is also familiar, but as a result of the director's arbitrary instructions, a completely different story unfolds. I don't want to be an extra in this drama, I'd rather pretend to be a theater critic."
Soon "proven"
Impartiality would be a basic requirement as an employee of the European Commission, yet Gábor Magyar made his position clear when he was appointed.
Not much time passed and he proved his "capability", as he was already working as a Brussels bureaucrat during the 2018 parliamentary elections. Shortly before the elections on April 8, the European Commission published its usual country report, in which the campaign topics of the domestic left were discussed: education, health care, corruption, justice, poverty, and the situation of the Roma. All this was not surprising in light of the fact that, according to Origo's information at the time, Gábor Magyar helped prepare the part of the report concerning the "efficiency of the administration of justice and the organization of the prosecution".
Main role in the report
The failure of the left in the 2018 elections did not discourage the lawyer-turned-Brussels bureaucrat. According to the Magyar Nemzet report last May, Gábor Magyar was appointed as the contact person of the preparatory delegation for the rule of law report on our country. For example, he compiled the list of the Hungarian civil organizations with which the European Court of Justice consulted during the preparation of the document examining the state of the rule of law in Hungary.
According to the paper's EU source, the function performed in the rule of law documents is not a new development, it has been known for some time that Magyar - who is an employee of the Directorate-General for Law Enforcement and Consumer Policy (DG JUST) of the EU Commission - will play a leading role in writing the report.
"Izgága is a left-wing political activist"
In the spring of 2021, the Fidesz European Parliament delegation made an objection, saying: Gábor Magyar - György Magyar, the son of the well-known left-wing lawyer - is not an independent EU official, but "in reality, an agitated left-wing political activist". In the letter written by head of delegation Tamás Deutsch and addressed to Vice-President Vera Jourová and Commissioner Didier Reynders, the European Commission was asked, among other things, how it is possible to expect someone who expresses such a biased and openly critical opinion of the Hungarian government to be able to impartially assess the state of the rule of law in Hungary ? In the response letter obtained by Magyar Nemzet, Commissioners Jourová and Reynders called the government's arguments a personal attack against an official of the Commission. As it was written in the three-sentence response letter, "the report is not considered the result of the work of a single person, but of the entire Commission, to which not only governments, but also non-governmental organizations could contribute".
Jourová and the so-called input
However, the EC's general staff's claim is strongly influenced by the facts. Magyar - as mentioned - works in DG JUST's department dealing with the rule of law and administration of justice, where Hungarian cases are specifically under his control, for example he is the expert in the article seven proceedings against our country, which mocked the rule of law. In the Magyar Nemzet article from May, referring to an EU source, it is also mentioned that this directorate-general provides background information, so-called "input", to the relevant EU commissioners, especially the liberal vice-president of the commission Věra Jourová. In theory, there may be a difference of opinion between the commissioners' cabinet and the directorate general, but in this case a politically based compromise of interests can be suspected. What Věra Jourová says about Hungary is mostly information from Gábor Magyar - this was already told by another source who requested anonymity.
It is therefore clear that the ammunition for the rule of law reports baselessly condemning our country is practically provided by the activists of the domestic left in Hungary and Brussels, including organizations disguised as civilians, supported by György Soros.
