Three people were killed in a shooting at Central High School for the Performing Arts in St. Louis, Missouri on Monday.
According to the local police chief, the roughly 20-year-old perpetrator is also among the dead, in addition to him, an adult woman and a teenage girl lost their lives. Six people had to be taken to hospital with gunshot wounds and shrapnel injuries.
The shooting happened shortly after 9 a.m. local time. There were seven security guards on duty at the school, and one of them noticed the man when he tried to enter through one of the closed doors. The guard immediately notified the school management and the police. The police did not say how the perpetrator finally got into the building.
At the sound of the shots, hundreds of students and teachers fled the building or tried to hide in the halls. The school was soon surrounded by dozens of police vehicles. According to the school district, the police "quickly stopped" the perpetrator.
"A firefight ensued, in which the suspect was hit," said the police chief.
No information has yet been released about the identity of the perpetrator and his possible motive, as well as the identity of his victims.
The school has about four hundred students.
