As is well known, the executive committee of the Munkacs municipality removed the Turul statue from the castle bastion, and placed the Ukrainian coat of arms in its place. Most of the people of Transcarpathia - regardless of nationality - believe that it was unnecessary to topple the statue in such a barbaric way, since the national symbols in the countryside, as before, will continue to coexist peacefully. On Tuesday, the Ukrainian coat of arms placed on the pedestal of the Turul statue was finally officially inaugurated in Munkac Castle.
Imre Pákh, a businessman from Münkacsi living in New York , the owner of the monument, offered a compromise solution to the Münkacsi city government in vain.
"What I tried to offer would have been, but I don't think it's relevant anymore, to restore the turul bird, and I will erect the Ukrainian trizib, the Ukrainian coat of arms for them at Munkacs Castle, just in another place, at my own expense. It is outrageous that the trident was placed on the original turulmadaras obelisk, since as far as I know it is still my property. So now we're going to court. What will be the fate of the turul bird? I'm sure that sooner or later he will return to Münkacsi Castle, but of course I don't know when. But, we will seriously work on this," Imre Pákh told M1 Hírado earlier.
As is known, the Munkács City Council adopted the decision on the removal of the Turul monument and the display of the Ukrainian coat of arms on October 13, 2022. The turul bird was removed the same day, within a few hours of the decision. Transcarpathian Hungarian organizations protested against the removal of the Turul statue, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade asked Ukraine's representative in Budapest about the incident.
Finally, on Tuesday, the Ukrainian coat of arms placed on the pedestal of the Turul monument was officially inaugurated in Munkac Castle. The three-pronged harpoon was handed over in a ceremonial setting on Tuesday, which was reported by Andrij Baloga, the mayor of Munkács.
The statue erected in 1896, considered one of the symbols of Munkács, was first demolished in 1924, during the Czechoslovak occupation, and later the Soviets did the same after the Second World War. The monument was re-inaugurated in 2008.
