Concerned people are coming to Hungary again to report Balos. The export of left-wing grievances is an old tradition, even the SZDSZ used it with gusto. For the failed opposition, instead of Washington, it is now enough to run to Brussels with the complaint.
In Mikszáth's excellent story Two Secret Agents, a German delegate arrives in Transylvania before the turn of the century to see for himself the disenfranchisement of the Saxons. The upright German defenders of rights are thoroughly prepared, they are taught how the violent Hungarians exterminate the word German, to trample on the rights of the poor Saxons. One agent thus travels from Saxon to Saxon, only hearing about deprivation of rights and oppressive Hungarians, and in the end his one-sided opinion is overwritten by a miraculous turn from Miksáth.
And why did I think of this? The EU's Culture and Education Committee sends a delegation to Hungary. According to the leaked information, in addition to two quick ministerial meetings, they will primarily visit opposition media bodies and organizations, Gergely Karácsony and Anette Bősz, and the CEU.
The ideological track of the visit already hints at the results, which were confirmed by the head of the delegation, Sabine Verheyen.
As he put it, they want to check the authenticity of the worrying news they receive, and they will closely monitor the rise of the idea of European citizenship and democracy - let's add, with the dedicated assistance of the opposition.
The mechanism is by no means new, and here we should think not only of the times of Miksáth. Our history after the regime change is richly interwoven with the policy of export of left-liberal forces. The recipe is always the same, with the perceived injustices of the right-wing governments, it is good to act as a vacuum cleaner agent at the current power centers until some kind of intervention can be squeezed out. The enthusiastically wrapped and taped-up social inequalities, diminishing freedoms, and exclusionary practices actually cover up the domestic political impotence of the left. The incoming visit and raised index finger resolution can then be sold as a success for the opposition, and of course it can strengthen the appearance of the government's isolation.
It's a simple method and can be played indefinitely. Its influence is guaranteed to be greater than that of a good kind of chartering, although of course it also remained a popular left-wing mass sport.
The conciliatory tactic of sneering abroad was already successfully used by the self-proclaimed SZDSZ against the Antall government, but there the International Monetary Fund and Washington were still the benevolent uncles.
However, the opposition, which suffered a crushing defeat in the election, now has enough to run to Brussels.
At the same time, the motivation has not changed in the slightest, if due to the fatal narrow-mindedness, fatal stupidity, and propagandistic brainwashing of the electorate (the relevant part must be underlined) the left-liberal forces have not been put in power again, then let the justice-distributing external power come. Withdrawal of funds, declaration of condemnation, legal sanctions. Come what may, as long as the government sucks, and if the whole country sucks, it's a negligible side effect.
At Mikszáth, the Germans' plan failed, and in the end the damning report was not prepared. We cannot expect a similar fabulous turn today, but it is also certain that the will of two-thirds of the electorate and the stability of the government will not be eroded by these kinds of visits. Of course, this is also perfect for another horror in times when there is a lack of thrillers.
