A stable Israeli government led by Benjamin Netanyahu and the midterm election victory of the American Republican Party would be a hopeful and encouraging development from the point of view of peace in the Middle East, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó stated on Wednesday in Jordan.
At the opening panel discussion of the Amman Security Forum, reacting to the previous day's Israeli election, the head of the ministry welcomed that there is a real chance of Netanyahu's return, which, according to him, is especially good news because he signed the Abraham Accords that normalized relations between Israel and several Arab countries.
He also called the prospects of the upcoming American mid-term elections encouraging, and added that the most encouraging and hopeful development from the point of view of peace and security in the Middle East would be if a stable, right-wing government was formed in Israel under the leadership of Benjamin Netanyahu, and in the United States the Republican Party obtained the congressional seat the majority.
Péter Szijjártó stated in his speech:
it would be important to continue the Middle East peace process started with the mediation of the previous US President Donald Trump, for our country, simply because the security situation in the region has a direct impact on the security situation in Europe.
In this connection, he reminded that after the failed attempts of the past decades, the conclusion of the Abraham Accords was the first successful peace initiative in the Middle East.
He believed that the merits of Donald Trump, who promoted dialogue and cooperation between Israel and the four Arab states involved, should be recognized in this, as this was essential for the normalization of relations.
The lesson was that a real leader was needed who was brave and strong enough to reopen the channels of communication between the parties in serious conflict with each other, he said.
He reported that
Europe would not be able to deal with another security challenge at the moment, therefore rapid progress towards peace and tranquility in the Middle East is needed.
In this regard, the minister also addressed the situation in Ukraine and emphasized that this method should be used there as well.
" If it was possible for President Trump to restart dialogue and bring peace closer between Israel and several Arab countries, then it should be possible to create peace in Ukraine, " he said.
He stated:
„dialogue and the re-opening of communication channels are necessary, because if we give up dialogue, we also give up the hope of peace”.
