NATO has strengthened its open-door policy, but it is clear that a given country can only join the military alliance if it does not endanger, but strengthens the security of the current member states, Péter Szijjártó, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, said in Bucharest on Wednesday.
The head of the ministry called the fact that Bosnia-Herzegovina, Georgia and Moldova were invited to the meeting eloquent during the briefing held during the break of the NATO foreign minister's meeting. He underlined:
the open door policy is in effect, however, it is clear that a country can only join if it does not endanger, but strengthens the security of the current member states.
As he stated, he held discussions with his Finnish and Swedish colleagues, to whom he told them that the entry of their countries would not be delayed in Hungary, and that it would not be delayed by a single day because of our country. He pointed out that they would have to agree with Turkey for this and expressed his hope that this would happen as soon as possible.
Péter Szijjártó reported that
the government has already submitted the ratification of the accession applications to the Parliament,
however, the representative body is currently busy with legislative proposals requested by the European Commission, so they will be able to put this on the agenda at the beginning of next year.
I assured my colleagues that, just as they, of course, have always taken a fair and unbiased approach to issues affecting Hungary, they can also expect a fair procedure and approach from Hungary, he said.
The minister announced that at Wednesday's NATO meeting, they mainly discussed the global effects of the war in Ukraine, including the economic recession, the growing threat of terrorism and the energy supply crisis, the management of which, according to him, requires serious efforts and sobriety.
He pointed out that many people affected the relations with China, and in this regard he stated that
Hungary absolutely does not want NATO to become a kind of anti-China block, just as it does not support the impossibility of economic cooperation either.
He emphasized: the Western world has huge opportunities in Chinese relations, it just needs to act rationally, without it the European economy simply cannot be successful, especially now, when the sanctions against Russia have already caused enough trouble. "Hungary is perhaps the best example of this, as Eastern and Western companies meet each other in Hungary," he said.
Péter Szijjártó then spoke about the growing threat of terrorism in Africa and the Middle East, also pointing out that jihadist organizations take advantage of the fact that the world's attention is largely focused on Ukraine. He stated:
it is important that NATO pays attention not only to the east, but also to the south, and that it deals sufficiently with action against terrorism.
Finally, speaking about the security of the energy supply, he stated that the government regards this as a physical issue, as well as a matter of national security and sovereignty, to which it is not willing to give either political or ideological color.
- It is important that the allies support, and not threaten with sanctions or other restrictive measures, steps taken to ensure the security of energy supply, as unfortunately happened during the construction of the Turkish Stream pipeline - he warned, adding that if Hungary had given in to the pressure, it would be practically impossible today would be our country's natural gas supply.
