The new Danish center-left-center-right coalition government is canceling a Christian holiday in order to invest part of the budget in the development of the armed forces instead. Due to the Russo-Ukrainian war, it has become one of Denmark's main priorities to implement the rule prescribed by NATO, according to which member countries must spend at least two percent of their GDP on military and defense expenses, reports hetek.hu .
Among the eleven Danish holidays, the "great day of prayer" designated also for confirmations, which was held on the Friday before the fourth Sunday after Easter and has been a national holiday since 1686, will probably be abolished. The move was criticized by many churches, but business owners are also worried about the government's decision, because they lose part of their income.
The Danish prime minister justified the cancellation of the holiday by saying that "a war is raging in Europe, and we need to strengthen our forces... For this, everyone needs to do a little more".
