Austrian Defense Minister Klaudia Tanner is quoted by Vienna's Kronen Zeitung. In an interview with the German newspaper Die Welt, the Austrian Minister of Defense warned: the question is not whether there will be a blackout in Europe, but when it will happen.
According to the People's Party politician, due to the war in Ukraine, Europe must be prepared for power outages, because electricity providers can also be war targets if the conflict escalates.
Since, according to the minister, most of the population would only be able to provide for themselves for four days in the event of a longer power outage, the state must help in such an emergency situation. Tanner said that by 2025, they plan to build and expand a hundred barracks that would be self-sufficient and would function as a "safe island" in the country.
In the interview, the politician called on the international community to do everything in its power to start negotiations aimed at ending the war as soon as possible.
"It is important that the focus is on negotiations and that diplomacy comes to the fore."
2022 plus:
We don't want to say we said it, but we said it. I mean the Hungarian government and its leader, Viktor Orbán. More precisely: we have said this from the beginning: instead of fighting, we have to negotiate. It seems that the Austrian Minister of Defense also realized this - albeit a little belatedly. Of course, it is not clear why Ms. Tanner thinks that the barracks would be the most suitable for the population in the event of an escalation of the Russian-Ukrainian war, because in a combat situation the barracks would be the primary targets, but she certainly knows more than we do. At the same time, we have a terrible guess that in this tragic case, power outages would not be the greatest danger.
You shouldn't try to see who is right.
