On January 6, the Epiphany Day ended the Christmas season, and the period of farewell to winter and waiting for spring began, the carnival lasting until Ash Wednesday, the beginning of the forty-day fast before Easter, the period of balls, parties and donut baking.
In 2023, the carnival period lasts from January 6 to February 21, Shrove Tuesday.
The length of the carnival varies, depending on when Easter Sunday is. From this day, we count back forty weekdays and Saturdays (a total of 46 days including Sundays), so we get the beginning of the Great Lent period, Ash Wednesday.
According to this calculation, in 2023, Ash Wednesday falls on February 22, when the forty-day Lent begins, which lasts until Easter Sunday, April 9.
Easter in 2023 will also be a long weekend, a four-day holiday from Good Friday to Easter Monday, i.e. April 7-10.
Civilians Info: It's Carnival! In such cases, we put on a mask, or wear a face that hides our everyday masks. So we can be cheerful from the bottom of our hearts, we can play the roles we want, and our terrifying busses drive the winter away from us. Then comes the carnival (carne lavare, giving up the meat), the world of the most magnificent scenery and costumes, the days of spectacular parades and balls.
We wish you a happy spring and an unforgettable carnival!
