Three young people rioted and attacked guests in the Crni ovan bar in the center of Novi Sad. Two people suffered minor injuries in the attack.
The masked attackers were young men who broke into the nightclub armed with boxers, baseball bats and machetes, reported Serbian Radio and Television (RTS). One of the two injured is the owner of the Crni ovan bar, who suffered bruises as a result of the blows, and a guest who, in addition to the bruises, also suffered a cut on his forearm.
According to the information of N1 and nova.rs, the attackers are members of a Neo-Nazi group, who were looking for the Serbian flag as an excuse when breaking into the nightclub, and after not getting a satisfactory answer to their question, they broke the glass of the door and window of the club. The owner of the place stated that the perpetrators wore clear fascist symbols: a swastika, an American Confederate flag and symbols of the fascist ideology of Zentropa.
According to the RTS information, the youngest perpetrator, MG, who was only 21 years old, was quickly found, but later the 22-year-old SD and the 23-year-old DA were also captured by the police. Proceedings were initiated in the case.
Milan Đurić, the mayor of Novi Sad, immediately reacted to the event. At the press conference, he congratulated the police and also expressed his gratitude for the quick and successful intervention in which the three perpetrators were caught extremely quickly after the investigation.
The mayor condemned the attack and added that violence and any form of national and religious hatred are unacceptable in the city, which has cherished the idea of togetherness and good neighborly relations for centuries. According to Đurić, he hopes that during the further investigation of the attack, all details will be revealed, and the perpetrators will receive appropriate punishment.
Equal Opportunities Commissioner Brankica Jovanović also condemned the attack by neo-fascists and stated: it is very important to react to these events in time, because racism and any form of it will not simply disappear if we do not take into account and simply ignore its presence, reports RTS.
According to the equal opportunities commissioner, ethnic-based discrimination and any form of attack caused by it should not be tolerated. In connection with the case in Novi Sad, he also mentioned the previous attack in Sarajevo, where Serbian parents and children were attacked.
According to Jovanović, education has a key role in curbing extremism. At the same time, it is also the responsibility of the competent institutions to respond appropriately to these dangerous forms of behavior that incite hatred towards others.
