Although Meloni's tough position on migration and his close relationship with conservative European leaders like Prime Minister Viktor Orbán - considered extreme by the People's Party - were initially viewed negatively by the largest faction of the Strasbourg-based body, according to the Brussels paper, next year's European Parliament elections and due to the approaching redistribution of positions, the politicians of the People's Party are quickly overcoming their concerns.

According to populist politicians and those close to Meloni, the goal would be to create a right-wing alliance with the Italian prime minister that would have enough influence in the European Parliament that will be reestablished next year and in the European Council, which brings together the heads of state and government, to be able to effectively have a say in the distribution of the most important EU offices.
