Back in 2018, one of the protagonists of the Brussels corruption scandal, Antonio Panzeri, signed a cooperation agreement with Qatar in one of the EP's banquet rooms, which officially does not exist and no one knows about it. At least that's what they say in Brussels, wrote Politico .
According to the Brussels newspaper, the non-existent, only one-page, never-verified, incomprehensible and vaguely worded document promised closer cooperation and the exchange of "experiences" and "expertise" between the EP and Qatar.
In reality, this meant nothing but trips to Doha and conferences, expensive five-star hotel rooms and entertainment. Each of these was paid for by Qatar
- writes Világgazdaság .
According to the portal, a delegation of EU politicians, led by Panzeri and with the participation of Eva Kaili, came to the Gulf country several times, where they praised Qatar as a role model for human rights.
The Brussels corruption scandal erupted in mid-December after the arrest of the protagonist of the case, Eva Kaili, a Greek socialist politician, who allegedly accepted bribes from Qatar and Morocco, and in return lobbied them for favorable decisions in Brussels.
A total of more than one and a half million euros, i.e. HUF 600 million, was found with Eva Kaili and the people close to her.
According to Belgian press reports, the left-wing representative and his family members also had bank accounts in Panama, where they collected 20 million euros, i.e. HUF 8 billion, from transfers from Qatar and Morocco. Eva Kaili was also arrested in December.
In the meantime, the members of the Socialists and Democrats group - who previously complained that they were linked to the scandal - are now campaigning for the release of Eva Kaili. According to them, he is being held in inhumane conditions, in a way that amounts to torture.
In connection with the corruption scandal, there have already been several arrests, among others, left-wing Belgian Marc Tarabella and Italian MEP Andrea Cozzolino were detained by the police.
One by one, the skeletons fall out of the closet, the connection of more and more left-wing representatives to the Brussels corruption scandal is revealed. We already know about the involvement of 60 representatives
– Ervin Nagy talked about this on M1. The XXI. According to the Század Intézet analyst, the suspicion is growing stronger that Hungarian left-wing EP representatives are also directly connected to the bribery scandal.
" The suspicion arises because our European Parliament representatives were in denial for a long time, so István Ujhelyi, Sándor Rónai and Klára Dobrev also said that they don't know anyone. Then it turned out that there were joint events, joint photographs, in which they participated or were seen, " explained the expert.
He added: the most affected socialist party association is working to sweep the scandal under the carpet and make it insignificant, but there are also many voices that want a detailed investigation of the case.
