Ferencváros will play against Bayer Leverkusen in the round of 16 of the Europa League. The first match will be played on March 9, and the second leg a week later, on March 16, in the Puskás Arena.
Today at noon at the headquarters of the European Football Association in Nyon, the pairings for the eighth final of the Europa League were drawn. The Hungarian participant of the series, Ferencváros, along with the English Arsenal, the Spanish Betis, the Turkish Fenerbahce, the Dutch Feyenoord, the German Freiburg and the Belgian Union Saint-Gilloise, was waiting for the draw as the group leader and therefore as a favorite.
The FTC and seven other clubs were drawn from the winners of the round-robin duel that ended yesterday. On Thursday evening, English Manchester United, Italian Juventus and Roma, German Leverkusen and Union Berlin, Spanish Sevilla and Real Sociedad, Ukrainian Saktar Donetsk and Portuguese Sporting ensured their participation in the top 16.
Teams from the same country cannot be drawn together in this round.
Zoltán Gera, the former 97-time Hungarian national team player of Ferencváros and the ambassador of the E-final in Budapest, also assisted in the draw.
Ferencváros avoided the star teams, they will meet the German Bayer Leverkusen among the top sixteen teams of the Europa League. The German team is familiar, in the 2021-22 season, the two teams met in the E group stage, then Fradi lost 2-1 away, and defeated the German opponent 1-0 at home.
The first match of the duel will be played on March 9 in Germany, the return match will take place a week later in the Puskás Arena.
At the draw, it was also revealed that Attila Szalai's team, Fenerbahce, will start the match at the home of Spanish Sevilla, Roland Sallai's team, Freiburg, will meet Juvemtus, András Schäfer's club, Union Berlin, will meet the Belgian opponent in the top 16.
