According to a survey, the vast majority of Slovaks do not support the transfer of fighter jets to Ukraine at all. The result of the public opinion poll is interesting because Slovak acting Prime Minister Eduard Heger announced on Friday that he will make all of his country's MiG 29 fighter jets available to the Ukrainian army.

"The government has decided and unanimously approved the international agreement based on which it will donate its MiG-29s and part of its air defense systems to Ukraine," Slovak Prime Minister Eduard Heger announced on Friday. Until the early elections in September, the head of the Bratislava cabinet emphasized that their decision was, in his opinion, completely in line with the Slovak constitution.

However, the leader of the opposition, the former prime minister of Slovakia, strongly disputes this.

Robert Fico announced: a criminal complaint will be filed at the Attorney General's Office for abuse of official authority in relation to the case against both the Prime Minister and the Head of State Zuzana Caputová.

Robert Fico stated: the acting cabinet does not have the authority to make decisions in such serious matters. He then added: the gift of 13 MiG 29s is also an unnecessary political gesture, the warplanes will not change the course of the war.

"This is not a war between Russia and Ukraine. This is primarily a war between the USA and the Western world and Russia in Ukraine," said Robert Fico. As a towering candidate for the early elections in Slovakia in September, Robert Fico took an anti-war stance from the beginning.

In an exclusive interview given to M1 a few weeks ago, in response to Judit Járai's question, he confirmed that he takes a similar position on the Russian-Ukrainian war as the Hungarian government and would stop arms shipments to Ukraine if he were to come to power.

"I think that a peace plan that is not very striking is better than a war plan, that is, to continuously prolong the war in Ukraine. If my party becomes part of the government coalition, we will stop the delivery of weapons from Slovakia to Ukraine. Because we don't believe that this is the solution to the problem," he said.

And it seems that this position is supported by the majority of the Slovak public.

According to a survey published on March 15, 60 percent of Slovak voters oppose the transfer of MiG 29s to Ukraine, while 60 percent also think that the weapons provided to Kiev will prolong the war.

Meanwhile, the Ukrainians themselves are not enthusiastic about handing over the MiGs.

A spokesman for the Ukrainian Air Force said in a TV program on Friday that these older Soviet fighter jets are not effective enough because of their outdated missiles and radars. According to Yuriy Inhat, Ukraine needs multi-purpose, modern Western aircraft, such as the F-16 fighter jets.
