On Thursday, Katalin Novák visited the site of one of the most serious natural disasters of recent decades, southern Turkey, which was hit by the February 6 earthquake. On the second day of his official visit, the Hungarian President viewed the affected area from a helicopter and personally met one of the youngest survivors of the 35 rescued by the Hungarian rescue teams, 5-year-old Ahmet Yildirim.
Vajk Farkas, the communication director of the Sándor Palace, told MTI: Katalin Novák also feels the pain of the Turkish families as a mother, and that is why she visited the region hit by the earthquake. He also emphasized that he was proud of all those who helped those affected by the earthquake in Turkey from the first minute. .Hungarian rescue teams managed to rescue Ahmet Yildirim from the ruins in the one hundred and twentieth hour, after eight and a half hours of struggle. The little boy's mother was still alive when the rescue teams reached them, but despite all their efforts, she did not get out alive from the hole that trapped them, neither did Ahmet's little sister and father.
The Hungarian rescue teams found Ahmet with the help of one of their search dogs, a dachshund. According to reports from the rescue teams, the boy's mother let go of Ahmet's hand and lost her life as soon as she felt that Ahmet was safe.
Five-year-old Ahmet will be raised by his paternal grandmother. The little boy is physically fine, but the doctors were unfortunately unable to save his right leg, so it had to be amputated.
The number of victims of the earthquake exceeded fifty thousand in Turkey and Syria.
Katalin Novák emphasized at the joint press conference following her meeting with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Ankara on Wednesday:
The Hungarians are providing assistance to the Turkish people in the disaster caused by the earthquake and in the following period as well.
