The city would take over the Vákár Lajos Ice Rink and other infrastructure belonging to the Csíkszereda Sports Club from the Ministry of Sports - among other things, this was decided at the regular meeting of Csíkszereda municipal representatives on Friday. If a government decision is made in this regard, the city would undertake the management, maintenance, and renovation of the building complex, while the hockey team would continue to be subordinated to the department.
However, the Sports Club remains subordinate to the Ministry of Sports. The maintenance cost of the buildings is 2.4–2.7 million lei per year, which will be financed by the county seat. The takeover requires a government decision, and if the bureaucratic procedures are completed, the city can begin the maintenance and repair work of the rather dilapidated artificial ice rink built in 1969, as well as the renovation of the changing rooms and washrooms. Furthermore, the feasibility study for the renovation of the building would be prepared in the second half of the year.
At the same time, they also plan to cover the speed skating rink - by the way, a large-scale competition was last organized here in February. In the long term, a new ice rink would also be built.
Minister of Sports Eduárd Károly Novák also joined the council meeting online, who said that according to the sports strategy, Csíkszereda should become the center of winter Olympic sports, just like Szeben, and should make room for figure skating and speed skating in addition to ice hockey. According to the plans, within 10 years, the appropriate infrastructure serving winter sports must be built in these centers.
