"I have to leave, because even though I have considered the strategy of the MSZP leadership to be wrong for years now, I don't even believe that it can be changed." - writes the politician on his Facebook page, who also founded a new party called Socialists and Democrats.

After much thought, I have decided to leave the Hungarian Socialist Party - wrote Attila Mesterházy on his Facebook page. The politician explained in detail that he has to leave because he has considered the strategy of the MSZP leadership to be wrong for years, and now he does not believe that it can be changed.

In my opinion, the MSZP is only a shadow of itself, it has lost its national political influence and social support, and it seems to me that there is no effort to regain it.

However, in the year since the elections, there would have been plenty of opportunity for this (inflation, energy prices, war, corruption, teachers' strike, healthcare, etc.)

- said Mesterházy.

As he wrote, contrary to his expectations, the five months that have passed since the reform of the MSZP did not bring anything new, everything continued as before. He added: "That's why I came to the conclusion that it is unnecessary to continue fighting in these circumstances for the MSZP to change. I'm tired of this, so I'd rather leave."

He emphasized the need to create new frameworks on the left.

Therefore, together with my friend László Szakács, the former Baranya county representative candidate of DK, as co-founders, we are founding a new social democratic, center-left party called "Socialists and Democrats"

- announced Attila Mesterházy.

According to the politician, the DK alone cannot address all social democratic voters, and those who have turned away from Fidesz and previously voted for the MSZP cannot. The clear goal of the new party is to win new voters for a change of government based on center-left politics, he said.

Attila Mesterházy concluded his post by saying that he joined the MSZP 23 years ago, he was a simple party member, faction leader, party president and prime minister candidate. Only his party membership changes, not his principles, he said.

In a statement sent to MTI on Tuesday, the MSZP wrote that they acknowledge the departure of Attila Mesterházy from the party.

They announced that they will continue the social democratic policy for a free, democratic and just Hungary; they continue to fight for the sake of the people, because their ideals, leftism, solidarity, justice are all for the betterment of the people. We continue to work to overcome the crisis of living, for real wage growth, to offset the consequences of the current government's flawed economic policy, they wrote.
