A stele marking a historical memorial site was inaugurated on Tápióbicské, the former battlefield, on Tuesday, on the 174th anniversary of the battle of Tápióbicské, the National Heritage Institute (NÖRI) told MTI.
In the announcement, it was recalled that in connection with the 175th anniversary of the revolution and freedom struggle of 1848-49, the site of the two most significant battles of the spring campaign, the battlefields of Tapióbicske and Isaszeg, became a historical memorial site.
According to the announcement, ministerial commissioner Péter Hoppál pointed out at the opening ceremony on Tuesday that the battle of Tapióbicske is one of the most beautiful chapters of the spring campaign of 1849, a triumph of perseverance, determination and willpower, where the brave Hungarian army won victory. He added: at this location, we can experience how the sacrifice of our ancestors became a nation-shaping force, how the triumph of 1848 prevailed despite the fall.
The self-sacrifice of our ancestors is not in vain as long as we are able to keep our nation's interests in mind and firmly represent them - emphasized the ministerial commissioner, who believes that if Hungary's interests are subordinated to the interests of other countries, then the freedom achieved in 1848-49 will be lost.
The significance of national and historical memorial sites is greater than we think, as they are important scenes and resources of national memory.
"The goal of the Hungarian government is to preserve the main arenas of Hungarian memory with dignity and respect, and now we can say that Tápióbicske also entered these arenas"
Péter Hoppál concluded his speech.
According to the press release, Gábor Móczár, the director general of NÖRI, pointed out at the stele inauguration: national and historical monuments are places where everyone can unobtrusively absorb all the knowledge that is much more difficult to acquire from history books.
He added that one of NÖRI's priority tasks is to nurture the heritage of our history and pass it on to the next generation. "Although apparently the revolution and freedom struggle of 1848-49 was a lost cause for us, leaving many broken families and widows behind. Still, thanks to this event, we inherited heroes and heroic deeds that still serve us, Hungarians, all over the world. March 15 is our national holiday, when we proudly wear the cockade, so we can safely say that this is the day that is one of the most important holidays of our togetherness. From today, here in Tápióbicské, there will also be a worthy flagpole to commemorate this," emphasized the general director.
In the announcement, it was recalled that on April 4, 1849, one of the most important battles of the spring campaign was fought in Tápióbicské, and two days later, on April 6, in Isaszeg, one of the brightest victories was won. During the spring campaign, the Hungarian main army tried to encircle the main imperial forces facing it. The attack initially went according to plan, but an unexpected event at Tápióbicské disturbed the Hungarian army, and the home army was ultimately victorious.
