The Belgian police raided the headquarters of the European People's Party (EPP) in Brussels on Tuesday, reports Euractiv . According to the first information, the police seized computers related to financial fraud, in which EPP employees are believed to be involved.
German media have reported that the investigation is not directed at the party or its current staff, but at Mario Voigt, the head of the CDU in Thuringia, who is suspected of corruption and bribery.
The police did not provide details about the purpose of the raid.
"The raid is related to the ongoing investigation in Thuringia, Germany," the EPP spokesperson said in a short press release, reports Euronews . He added: "the party cooperates with the relevant authorities with full transparency and provides all relevant information and documents".
Voigt worked for the EPP in the 2019 election cycle.
Investigators are believed to be trying to determine how much money Voigt may have received or handled during that time. In addition, documents related to employment contracts are being sought and witnesses are being spoken to in Brussels, German media reported.
The European People's Party confirmed that the Belgian and German authorities "paid a visit" to the party's headquarters in Brussels. As written: the "visit" is related to the ongoing investigation in Thuringia, Germany.
