American Ambassador David Pressman called it a cause for concern that Viktor Orbán identified the United States as Hungary's adversary at the beginning of March, wrote Népszava , whose journalist was able to accompany the diplomat to Szeged. With the permission of the American embassy, the social democratic daily revealed so much about the "confidential conversations" because, according to David Pressman, this kind of anti-American rhetoric from an allied country is unprecedented.
It is not entirely clear what statement Viktor Orbán, the diplomat, is referring to. The Hungarian Prime Minister did indeed identify opponents , but the United States was not among them. The prime minister named three groups:
- the pro-war international interest groups consisting of the Biden administration, pro-war Brussels bureaucrats and pro-war politicians,
- the dollar left led by Gyurcsány, which he says was bought by the kilo and only does what their clients ask,
- and named the international speculators who want to profit in times of war.
The American ambassador complained that, at least in his view, the Orbán government did not distance itself from Russia despite the war. According to him, there is bipartisan agreement in the United States on the related concerns, and there is complete consensus in national security circles, and even some members of the opposition Republican Party have an even tougher stance on the Hungarian leadership.
According to him, based on these, Fidesz hopes in vain that the outcome of next year's US presidential election will bring a change in bilateral relations.
