The resurrection of Jesus Christ is the biggest holiday of Christianity, which is called Easter. But why was this holiday named Easter?
Well, the word refers to the ingenuity and magnificence of the Hungarian language, as it signals the end of the fasting period. We call the beginning of fasting meat-free and the end of this nutritional period, so when you are allowed to eat meat for the first time, that is, take it to yourself, we call it Easter.
Why do we eat cake, ham and horseradish at Easter?
Ham, bread, horseradish, eggs - these are essential ingredients for Easter breakfast. Cake, bread symbolizes abundance and prosperity, in many places the cake was woven into the shape of a wreath, reminiscent of Christ's crown of thorns.
According to Hungarian customs, people no longer slaughtered pigs after the carnival, the fresh meat was consumed before the fast, but the smoked hams were prepared during or at the end of the fast. It was not possible to eat ham during fasting, so it was first served on the table at Easter.
The egg symbolizes new life, rebirth and fertility, but it is also a symbol of purity and life, which is consecrated in Catholic churches - along with ham, horseradish and cake - on Easter Sunday.
From a Christian point of view, Easter eggs symbolize the rising and resurrection of Jesus from the grave, and the color red represents the spilled blood of Christ.
According to Jewish tradition, horseradish is one of the bitter herbs eaten on the Seder, and according to other theories, its pungent-bitter taste reminds us of the sufferings of Jesus.
