The Ukrainian border guard is trying by all means to prevent conscripted men from leaving the country, therefore it publishes the results of the fight against illegal migration and human smuggling networks.

Men between the ages of 18 and 60 cannot leave Ukraine due to the state of war, who are caught while fleeing and have already received the draft,

they can be sentenced to three to five years in prison.

Despite this, many people try to cross the border, most of them try to go in the direction of Romania. However, the road is not at all safe. Most of the victims die when they try to swim across the ice-cold Tisza.

According to Romanian data, 5,400 people crossed the border illegally last year, 2,000 crossed the river.

The Romanian border guard collects 10-15 refugees every day in the Máramaros area alone

- said Lulia Stan, spokesperson of the Máramaros county police.

Most of the men who cross the river are in a very bad condition, suffering from frostbite, broken bones, and needing medical help, the spokesperson said. Last year, 10 bodies were washed ashore by the river, but those who do make it through enjoy temporary protection in the European Union for a year.
