"Hungary facilitates the safe, humane journey of those fleeing the tragedies and injustices caused by the Kremlin," the ambassador said, according to Mandiner.
The paper previously reported that Ambassador David Pressman is traveling to the Hungarian-Ukrainian border and meeting with American soldiers helping to secure NATO's eastern flank. The ambassador met with Ukrainian refugees who are currently housed in a refugee shelter in Máriapócs, the embassy announced on its website. He then traveled to Mátészalka, where he met with members of the local community and local officials.
He visited the local historical synagogue and the monument of a famous Hungarian-American actor.
From there, the ambassador visited Beregsurány, where he was received by the mayor István Herka, and visited the Hungarian Charity Service in Malta to learn about their work for refugees from Ukraine. He said: "It is inspiring to see the work of civilians supporting their neighbors fleeing the destruction in Ukraine."
The ambassador praised Hungary's efforts:
"It was important to hear the very real stories of human suffering and resilience shared with me by Hungarians serving their country who meet innocent people fleeing Vladimir Putin's war in Ukraine every day. As the front line of NATO and the European Union, it is essential from the point of view of the security of our European allies that Hungary facilitates the safe and humane journey of those fleeing the tragedies and injustices caused by the Kremlin," he said at the Hungarian-Ukrainian border crossing in Beregsurány.
The embassy announced that Pressman's tour of the country will continue in Veszprém, where he will meet with American soldiers who play an important role in securing NATO's eastern flank.
