The Greek politician, who is a prime suspect in the corruption scandal, is trying to get her house arrest lifted as she wants to return to work as a member of the European Parliament, Kaili's lawyers told POLITICO.

Two other MEPs involved in the investigation – Belgian Marc Tarabella and Italian Andrea Cozzolino – may soon follow Kaili. As of Tuesday, Tarabella is no longer required to wear an electronic tracker and can leave house arrest under certain conditions.

The three are still accused of corruption, money laundering and participation in a criminal organization.

But as the press department of the parliament reported,

"they will continue to be members of the European Parliament, with all the rights associated with the position".

This means that they are all paid from the EU budget - and can still vote.
