Among the best-known leaders, Pope Francis (92 percent) and Viktor Orbán (72 percent) are considered by Hungarians to be pro-peace in the highest proportion, according to a poll by the Nézőpont Institute. The majority considers Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi (53 percent), US President Joe Biden (58 percent) and Russian President Vladimir Putin (68 percent) to be clearly pro-war. According to research by the Nézőpont Institute, a large majority of left-wing, opposition voters also recognize Viktor Orbán's support for peace.

After a year of devastation in Ukraine and the economy of the Russian-Ukrainian war, the question of a cease-fire or peace was still not in sight. After buying and transporting deadly weapons, and while the European Union is preparing the eleventh package of sanctions, an important question is whether the international actors will take steps in the direction of peace or war.

The Nézőpont Institute was interested in how Hungarians judge the position of the best-known leaders in relation to the Ukrainian-Russian conflict.

The authors of the survey remind us that there have been few international speeches in the name of peace in the recent period. On the contrary, during his visit to Hungary, Pope Francis repeatedly called for the "creative efforts" necessary for peace in Ukraine.

According to the research, the Holy Father is the most pro-peace (92 percent), and almost no one (1 percent) thinks he is on the side of war.

The Nézőpont Institute also draws attention to the fact that, apart from the head of the Catholic Church, the majority of Hungarians think that the Hungarian prime minister is the only one who wants to promote peace (72 percent), and only a fifth of them think otherwise (14 percent).

Not only the government supporters (94 percent), but also the majority of the opposition (50 percent) are convinced that Viktor Orbán is pro-peace. According to the public opinion survey, among Fidesz voters, almost no one (1 percent) thinks that they would not support peace, while only less than a third of leftists can imagine this (30 percent). .

According to the survey, the opinion of the leaders of the two largest member states of the European Union is already more divided. French President Emmanuel Macron, who held a peace conference in December, is assumed by more people (46 percent) to want to promote peace than those who think he is actually on the side of war (19 percent). After his initial reluctance, the leader of Germany, Chancellor Olaf Scholz, who has been providing more and more weapons to Ukraine, is now thought by more people to be in favor of war (35 percent) than to want a ceasefire (33 percent).

Regarding the fate of the war, the opinion of the most influential international actors is clearly pro-war - draws attention to the announcement of the Nézőpont Institute.

According to the majority of Hungarians, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi (53 percent), American President Joe Biden (58 percent) and Russian President Vladimir Putin (68 percent) are also interested in continuing the fighting.

There are a minority of those who believe that the number one leader of Ukraine (30 percent), the largest arms supplier, the United States of America (23 percent), or the war-starter Russia (16 percent), would strive for peace.
