Hungary will always oppose measures that threaten the viability of the economy - the President of the Republic declared to the patina Neue Zürcher Zeitung.
"In the interview, I was asked about the war in Ukraine, the Western Balkans, Hungary's relationship with Europe, and I also talked about Transcarpathian Hungarians," wrote the head of state in his Facebook post, who pointed out in the lengthy interview that the Western Balkans must not be forgotten, and that speed up the EU accession of the countries in the region, because "if something happens in Kosovo, the situation can quickly escalate".
Regarding the situation of European values in Ukraine, he said that the new laws that violate the rights of minorities, including Hungarians, represent a step backwards. Minority rights belong to the essence of the European community, the issue of legislation is therefore "not just a bilateral problem", said Katalin Novák, adding that no positive changes are visible.
At the same time, he emphasized that he condemned the Russian aggression from the first moment, and that the whole of Hungary stands by the territorial integrity of Ukraine.
"As with all major conflicts, the war in Ukraine also applies to the fact that the great powers are operating in the background, but "Ukraine is a sovereign country that has been attacked by its neighbor, and it is doing everything humanly possible to protect its citizens," the head of state emphasized.
Ukraine defends itself "with its own strength", but with the support of many countries, which "of course affects the course of the war", he added.
"Russia cannot achieve its military goals, we cannot allow this, but no one can say how to reach a lasting and just peace," said Katalin Novák, who agrees with Ukraine's support, but fears that military support will be even more fan the flames of war. Heavy weapons for offensive operations can lead to "rapid escalation", but it is "different when it comes to protecting the population".
Regarding the sanctions against Russia, he explained that emotional action should not prevent a rational assessment, which shows that the sanctions have an effect, "but they hurt us more than Russia." The head of state also stated: Hungary will always oppose measures that threaten the viability of the economy.
He stated about the future of Hungarian-Russian relations: the framework defining relations is formed by the fact that "Hungary is a member of the EU and NATO, and there will be no change in this".
With regard to the relationship with the EU and the United States, he emphasized that "foreign actors are strongly interfering in Hungary's internal affairs" and "trying to change the political leadership and our Christian-conservative direction", but everyone should note that the government was democratically elected.
When asked how he sees his role in relation to Prime Minister Viktor Orbán's activities, he said that according to the Basic Law he has a role as head of state in international relations, "if you like, I am Hungary's number one ambassador".
