The cardinal was relentlessly opposed to all the dictatorships of the 20th century, said the minister in charge of the Prime Minister's Office on Saturday at the inauguration of the Mindszenty statue erected at the Hungarian Crossroads in Fátima, Portugal.
"That is why he was tortured and imprisoned by the Hungarian Nazis and Rákosi under the leadership of the Soviet Republic, Szálasi, and the communist dictatorship. He was unbreakable and relentless in the cause of faith, the nation's freedom and human dignity."
He continued that Mindszenty's guidance is clear and eternal. He quoted the cardinal, who said: "in a deteriorating world, stay loyal to God, your faith, your country, the Hungarian past, history and the Hungarian language! This is your natural right and duty. We have to rebuild the country from the little that is left. Spiritual renewal can only lead to national resurrection".
He spoke about how József Mindszenty's life, in many great struggles, he resisted in each case not because he had a chance, but because he was right.
"From an earthly perspective, we believe that rational consideration and chance are everything. (…) From the point of view of eternity, chance is irrelevant. From that point of view, only the truth matters"
said Gergely Gulyás.
Cardinal Mindszenty undertook, survived and was able to endure the torture, prison, and exile of the communists, first in his own country and then abroad, because he was already here on Earth at the service of eternal justice, he emphasized.
"We Hungarians know that - in the words of Ottó Habsburg - József Mindszenty's Good Friday brought us our resurrection.
We Hungarians know what - VI. Making amends for Pope Pál's serious mistake - Rome must also admit: József Mindszenty was not only the greatest Hungarian high priest, but also a saint"
he added.
He recalled: the cardinal's priestly motto was "Devictus vincit", meaning "Victorious, he wins". According to the politician, Mindszenty proved this with the example of his life.
From now on, when his figure engraved in stone also in Fatima enables the main drive for posterity, we can rightly say "Devictus vincit, mortuus vivit, The vanquished has won, the dead lives"
- He told.
Sculptor Tibor Rieger's work depicting József Mindszenty (1892-1975) was unveiled at the Maria shrine, at the entrance to the Hungarian Way of the Cross, by Carlos Cabecinhas, rector of the Fátima shrine, and Franciscan monk Viktor Tömördi. Miguel de Pape, the president of the Portuguese-Hungarian Cooperation Association, gave a welcome address at the event, and Martinho Villani, the co-president of the Portuguese-Hungarian Cooperation Association, also spoke.
According to the Prime Minister's Office, during his visit to Portugal, Gergely Gulyás held a meeting with Chancellor Mariana Vieira da Silva and attended a working lunch with André Ventura, the president of the Chega party and the Hungarian-Portuguese Friendship Group of the Portuguese Republic.
