Unsurprisingly, on the advice of the foreign ministers of the European Union, the war became the focus of the negotiations again, wrote Péter Szijjártó in his Facebook post
"However, the time has come for everyone to realize that this war has no solution on the battlefield. This is evidenced by the many new deaths and the ever-stronger open reference to the probability of natural disasters and nuclear accidents," emphasized the Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, in connection with the EU Foreign Affairs Council meeting in Luxembourg adopting a resolution that with 3.5 billion euros raises the upper limit of the entire financial framework of the European Peace Facility (EPF).
Péter Szijjártó stated: Hungary only agreed to the increase in such a way that the Western Balkans and African countries also receive from the increased budget in order to reduce migration pressure and that it cannot be used for new arms deliveries to Ukraine, because the Ukrainian authorities must put an end to this ridiculous and to their false claim that the largest Hungarian bank, OTP, is considered a war sponsor.
Szijjártó also reminded that: Ukraine is currently not meeting the requirement to respect the rights of national communities, as was established by the Venice Commission, and if this remains the case, if Kiev does not restore the rights of the Hungarian community, then Hungary will not support Ukraine's EU accession his aspirations.
The purpose of the decision to increase the European Peace Framework is to ensure the financial sustainability and predictability of the European Peace Framework in the long term, as well as the ability of the European Union to react quickly to prevent crises and conflicts, according to the statement of the Council of Foreign Affairs. With the addition, the total financial framework of the European Peace Framework exceeds 12 billion euros.
In their press release, the foreign ministers of the EU member states underlined: the decision ensures that the EU has the funding framework to continue providing concrete military support to the armed forces of its partners. It was announced that since the establishment of the European Peace Framework in 2021, this is the second time that the EU has increased the financing of the framework, which continuously ensures that the Union can support its partners. The decision also sends a clear political signal that the EU is permanently committed to military support for Ukraine and other partners.
The European Peace Facility was established in March 2021 to finance all actions of the common foreign and security policy related to military and defense matters in order to prevent conflicts, preserve peace and strengthen international security and stability. The European Peace Framework enables the EU to finance measures aimed at strengthening the military and defense capacities of non-EU countries and regional and international organisations.
Under the instrument, the EU has so far supported the Ukrainian armed forces through seven consecutive aid packages, as well as a number of other countries, including Mozambique, Georgia, Moldova, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Somalia, Niger, Mauritania, Lebanon and Jordan. The EPF also supported military forces in African-led peace support operations and multinational military units.
