the Austrian Der Standard , Viera Zuborova, the head of the research department of the Political Institute in Bratislava, writes that the September election in Slovakia will be a turning point. According to the expert, the stakes have not been this high since the regime change: it will be decided whether democracy will survive, or whether an authoritarian regime, even more autocratic than Orbán's Hungary, will be created.
He sees Slovakia heading in a dangerous direction, given the pro-Russian statements of the most likely candidate, Robert Fico, xenophobia, and the rise of radical forces.
The political scientist calls Slovakia a country of disappointed masses.
According to him, Fico is a master of creating general fear with various terrifying scenarios. What's more, the former Social Democratic Prime Minister has become so radicalized that it is already reminiscent of the 90s, only now he is doing it even more vilely.
Compared to him, even Orbán's political style seems particularly decent,
the author believes.
