According to the announcement of the Linguistics Research Center, the 20th International Linguistics Olympiad was held at the end of July in Basko, Bulgaria, with the participation of 38 countries, 52 teams and 205 competitors.

This year, the students of the two teams formed after multiple rounds of selection also needed knowledge of the structure of languages, the ability to discover interesting and unusual phenomena that can be observed in them, as well as logical mathematical thinking and the ability to quickly review combinatorics and logic tasks, they indicated.

Among the tasks were languages ​​such as the Xinka language of Guazapan and the Cree language of the Plains or the Apuriná language spoken in the Amazon.

The Hungarian team finished the competition with extraordinary results this year: Móricz Benjamin won a silver medal, Károly Bognár András won a bronze medal; both are graduates of Budapesti Fazekas Mihály High School.

According to the announcement, a historic success was achieved in the team competition: Lili Baranyai (Miskolci Hermann Ottó High School), Júlia Hegedűs (ELTE Radnóti Miklós Gyakorlóiskola), Vilmos Molnár-Szabó (Mihály Fazekas High School in Budapest), Benjamin Móricz won the bronze medal.

It was emphasized that so far no Hungarian team has achieved a podium finish in the team competition of the International Student Linguistics Olympiad.
