The only professional competition of beach gastronomy to date has taken place, which significantly contributes to the renewal of the "retro offer".

The dish of Terasz Bisztró in Balatonalmád, the homemade pie called Balaton tongue, won the Beach Food of the Year competition announced for the ninth time by the Balaton Circle, Gábor Kardos, the creator of the competition, announced on Thursday on the beach in Balatonudvari.

Chosen as the beach dish of the year, the Balaton tongue pie is a homemade pie made with spinach cream cheese, tomatoes, basil and smoked beef tongue from Bakony.

In the other categories, the best bistro dish was the cold pumpkin stew from Gianpiero's in Balatonboglár, which is served without toppings, but can also be ordered with shrimp or other traditional toppings.

The flaming pil-pil with cheek from the Lángos World buffet in Balatonmáriafürdő was chosen as the discovery of the year.

The vegan special award winner was the celery ravioli from Fogas Bisztró in Alsóörs, in which the mushroom filling was placed between thinly sliced celery sheets instead of pasta.

The "well-priced" food category announced for the first time this year was won by the Party mood buffet in Vonyarcvashegy with the Party catfish dish, in which the Hortobágy pancake was transformed into Balatoni by serving the catfish paprikash with cottage cheese in a pancake.

The nine finalist dishes were tasted on Wednesday by a jury consisting mostly of gastronomy journalists, joined by two chefs - Richárd Csillag and Norbert Sipos.

Gábor Kardos called the competition the only professional evaluation of beach gastronomy to date, which significantly contributes to the renewal of the "retro offer".

These dishes, keeping in mind the regional ingredients and the regional approach, offer gastronomic experiences to a much wider audience at prices more accessible than fine dining, by making global street food recipes into Balaton.

In the competition, the vegetarian and vegan trend appeared even more markedly than last year.
